STORY: At least two-dozen agricultural technocrats (professionals) of Jammu and Kashmir government's Department of Agriculture were injured when police baton charged them and used water cannons to quell their protest at Jammu on Wednesday (December 16).

The police action forced the agriculture graduates who were protesting against non-regularisation of their posts to turn violent.

These agricultural professionals were appointed under Rehbar-e-Ziraat (protector of forest) scheme with an assurance that their services would be regularised in due course.

Earlier on Tuesday (December 15), at least 250 agitating appointees from two wings of the Agriculture Department commenced an indefinite hunger strike outside Press Club Jammu to press their demands.

The striking agriculture professionals accused the police of brutally using force even though their protest had been in a peaceful manner.

"The Chief Minister assured us of regularising our jobs four months ago but he has failed to fulfill his promises. After this the technocrats who appointed under Rehbar-e-Ziraat were observing fast unto death. And today to press our demands, we were holding a peaceful rally but the police used brute force and cane charged the demonstrating men. They also used water and took the protestors forcibly, who were sitting on fast and forced them to break the fast. But we will continue our struggle till death," said Rajiv Sharma, a protestor.

These agricultural technocrats have been protesting for the last three months.he R-e-Z scheme was first launched in 1984. The services of the appointed agriculture professionals were regularised and posted as Junior Agriculture Assistants on completion of six months.

However, after the initial confirmation of services, the later agriculture professionals appointed under R-e-Z were not regularised.

The department has also not recruited any agriculture graduates since 1996.

Reportedly, chief of Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah had promised to look into their demands even though the regularisation of services of agricultural technocrats was a difficult task as they were engaged without any scheme or plan.
