Omar Abdullah to discuss Qureshi attack with Chidambaram

New Delhi, Mon, 07 Dec 2009 ANI

New Delhi, Dec.7 (ANI): Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah will meet Union Home Minister P.Chidambaram here today to discuss the fallout of the attempted assassination on moderate Hurriyat leader Fazal Haque Qureshi last week.

Abdullah and Chidambaram are also likely to discuss the next steps in the ongoing quiet dialogue with the moderate faction of the All Party Hurriyat Conference (APHC).

Unidentified gunmen opened fire and critically wounded Qureshi, a close aide of moderate Hurriyat faction leader Mirwaiz Omar Farooq in Srinigar on Friday evening.

Qureshi is a senior separatist leader and executive committee member of the All Party Hurriyat Conference (Freedom) and also chairman of the Peoples Political Front.

The incident took place at the Soura locality of Srinagar.

According to Jammu and Kashmir Police, suspected militants fired at Qureshi this evening.

Qureshi's condition is said to be still very critical.

Chidambaram has condemned the attack, but said that talks with separatist elements in the Kashmir Valley will continue in a quiet way.

Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, the chief of the moderate APHC faction, has made it clear that they will not allow the attack to scuttle the peace process in Kashmir.

"We want to inform all those destructive elements that the Hurriyat Conference will not be cowed down by attacks such as these. We will see the Kashmir issue through its end. It is our endeavour to look for a solution for the problems prevalent here by means of talks with Pakistan and India," he said.

Unidentified gunmen allegedly belonging to Al-Nasreen terror group have claimed responsibility for the incident. (ANI)
