Anderson's mysterious knee injury threatens his selection for Test against South Africa

London, Dec. 6 (ANI): England bowler Jimmy Anderson's mysterious knee injury has left England medics baffled, and the swing-king may have to opt out of the First Test with South Africa.

The man-of- the-match in last Sunday's one-day series decider had a cortisone jab yesterday but team doctors admit they still do not know what is wrong with him.

Uncapped Durham seamer Mark Davies has been called up from the Performance Squad as cover for Anderson and fellow injury worry Ryan Sidebottom.

Anderson almost flew home before last week's fourth one-dayer in Port Elizabeth but England gambled on his fitness and were rewarded with a five-wicket haul.

However, that decision now appears to have backfired with Anderson facing a race against time to be fit for the First Test in Centurion a week on Wednesday.

Former England skipper Michael Vaughan, whose own career was ended by a chronic knee injury, believes the Lancashire ace has cause for concern.

"I hate this talk of Jimmy's knee. I know as much as most people about knees and there must be something wrong with his for them to have talked about him coming home," News of the World quoted him, as saying.

"It's so important he stays fit because he's got the ability to make a difference with the ball that no other England player has at the minute," he added. (ANI)
