Assam bomb blast death toll rises to seven (Update Assam blast)

Nalbari, Sun, 22 Nov 2009 ANI

Nalbari (Assam), Nov 22 (ANI): The death toll in Sunday's three bomb blasts in Assam's Nalbari District has risen to seven people and 35 injured.

According to the police, two bombs exploded outside a police station in Nalbari at around 10.30 a.m.

The serial bomb blast rocked Assam barely four days before the first anniversary of the 26/11 terror attacks on Mumbai. A third bomb blast took place in the Gopal Bazar area.

The explosions took place hours before Home Minister P. Chidambaram is due to arrive in the city to review the overall security situation in the state.

No outfit has claimed responsibility for the blast, but police suspect the involvement of nine most wanted United Liberation Front of Assom (ULFA) terrorists who are reportedly sleeked into the country from Myanmar and Bnagladesh.

Assam Police, insist that the outfit is desperately trying to carry out a few strikes in the run-up to their protest day on Friday.

They suspect that Sunday's blasts could be linked to the recent arrest of senior leaders, including Sasha Choudhury and Chitrabon Hazarika.

The attacks came even as sources within the government revealed that there is plan to provide safe passage to the ULFA leaderships provided they adjure violence and lay down arms unconditionally.(ANI)
