Mumbai terror attack sites become tourist spots

Mumbai, Mon, 16 Nov 2009 ANI

Mumbai, Nov 16 (ANI): Its boom time for travel agents as tourists flock to sites of last year's terror attacks in Mumbai.

A large number of foreign tourists have of late been visiting the sites to get an idea of the impact of these attacks, providing brisk business to travel agents.

"Yes, I am aware of that. Some foreigners have come here. They want to see the bullet marks, what happened, from all over the world," said Eric Anthony, manager of Leopold cafe.

But some tourists disapproved of it saying it was a bad way to make money.

"I think it is a bad idea to make money out of it and I would not agree to be guided by tourist agencies to be led to places where this happened," said Phokar Ponarama, a foreign tourist.

The 2008 attacks were more than ten coordinated shooting and bombing attacks across Mumbai.

Eight of the attacks occurred in South Mumbai at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, the Oberoi Trident, the Taj Mahal Palace and Tower, Leopold Cafe, Cama Hospital, the Orthodox Jewish-owned Nariman House, the Metro Cinema, and a lane behind the Times of India building and St. Xavier's College. There was also an explosion at Mazagaon, in Mumbai's port area, and in a taxi at Vile Parle.

Several people were held hostage for the next three days and at least 166 people were killed before commandoes smoked out the last of the terrorists on November 28. (ANI)
