Ferryboats pressed in for rescue operations as heavy rains lash Tamil Nadu

Chennai, Mon, 09 Nov 2009 ANI

Chennai, Nov 9 (ANI): Ferryboats rescued people from low-lying areas in Chennai as heavy rains lashed Tamil Nadu on Sunday, inundating several areas and bringing traffic to a halt.

Water logging on roads at various places led to disruption in vehicular movement, causing great inconvenience to commuters.

Motorists had a hard time navigating the flooded roads, unable to distinguish the waterlogged pathways from the overflowing drains.

"The government should take necessary action. The people who are going to schools and Colleges are getting affected. We are not able to reach the place at times," said Krithika Kumari, a resident.

"People are unable to move. Old people and sick persons and old women are finding it difficult to move. So we have arranged for boats and skilled persons to lift the persons from one place to another place," said Sam Vincent, Inspector In-Charge, Rescue Team, Chennai.

Weatherman said the rain was caused by the well marked low pressure over Comorin area. The system was likely to move in a north- northwesterly direction and concentrate into a depression in a couple of days. (ANI)
