Security beefed up in boarding schools in Dehradun

Dehradun, Sat, 07 Nov 2009 ANI

Dehradun, Nov 7 (ANI): Security was beefed up in two prestigious boarding schools in Dehradun following intelligence alert of a possible militant strike after the arrest of an American national by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on charges of plotting terror-attacks overseas, including India.

Police beefed up security of the Woodstock and the Doon School, two prestigious boarding schools of the city.

"We are closely monitoring the security arrangements in these schools...we are holding meeting with the management and telling them what more they can do for strengthening their security...we have also deployed a team of PAC (provincial armed constabulary) and QRT (quick response team)...besides this, we have issued an alert to LIU (Local Investigative Unit)," said Abhinav Kumar, Senior Superintendent of police, Dehradun.

"We have launched a massive verification programme in the neighbouring areas of these schools...we are taking all these measures in the wake of latest intelligence alert," he added.

"To date, the Doon School has received no indication from authorities that there was or is any specific threat to us from terrorists...There is always a general threat to a high profile institution like ours so we are routinely in contact with Police for advice and support.

After these media reports we have obviously stepped up ... with the security and authorities," said P. K. Malviya, Spokesperson, the Doon school.

The FBI arrested David Coleman Headley, a Chicago resident last month for plotting terror-attacks. He was arrested by the FBI along with Pakistani-born Canadian citizen Tahawwur Hussein Rana.

Interrogation revealed the duo were planning attacks on New Delhi's National Defence College, two boarding schools and five star hotels. (ANI)
