Shiv Sena fought for public interest, not individual gain: Uddhav Thackeray

Mumbai , Tue, 27 Oct 2009 ANI

Mumbai, Oct 26(ANI): Shiv Sena Executive President, Uddhav Thackeray, on Monday said the disappointing defeat in the Maharashtra assembly elections did not mean the end of the road for the party.

Addressing the media at Sena Bhawan in Mumbai, Thackeray said the Sena's struggle against injustice would continue.

"This is not the defeat of Shiv Sena. I don't think we failed, because our battle was not for individual gains, but for the larger public interest," Uddhav said.

He further assured support to Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan for the Congress -Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), alliance in the State, which formed the next Government after winning 147 of the 288 constituencies.

"I assure our support for all pro-people decisions of the new Government, but we will vehemently oppose any decision which goes against the interests of the people," Thackeray said.

The Shiv Sena fought the Assembly elections in an alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). But it miserably failed, as it could secure only 90 seats in the 288-member State Assembly. The Shiv Sena won 44 seats and the BJP 46 seats. (ANI)
