Jharkhand villagers march against killer hooch

Seraikela (Jharkhand), Mon, 19 Oct 2009 ANI

Seraikela (Jharkhand), Oct 19 (ANI): People from a number of villages joined a protest march against bootlegging in Jharkhand recently.

Carrying swords, sticks, axe, bows and arrows, people from around 20 villages protested against illicit liquor sale in Seraikela district.

Many people have died in the region after consuming illicit liquor.

Families get shattered as the male earning members spend all their money on liquor, making life pure hell for women and children.

"We are campaigning against liquor as around 30 to 40 people have died in the past five years in the villages and many are unwell after liquor consumption," said Muniram Hembram, a protestor.

The villagers demanded a ban on the sale of alcohol and closure of liquor vends.

"We will try to convince them peacefully to shutdown liquor shops. If they still won't listen to us then we will boycott them from the society and the village," said Sarla, another protestor.

Locals, with the help of the village council, have approached the State Governor and complained against the thriving illegal business.

Further, they say that they would intensify their protest if the government fails to curb the sale of alcohol in the district.

There is a thriving business in illicit liquor in parts of India as poor people find it a lot cheaper than legally brewed alcohol. (ANI)
