Jalpaiguri, Oct 13 (ANI): Breached Teesta canal in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district has flooded many villages.

Noapara was one among the villages.

Poddut Debnath, an affected villager, said that the canal suddenly breached and they had to leave their houses and come to the road.

"Suddenly the canal broke. We got scared. We left our homes and took our children to safer places. There was lot of confusion," said Debnath.

Debnath added the canal had breached before also and now it has breached at the same place again.

Around one lakh villagers have been affected. Hundreds of acres of paddy land are under water and many bamboo trees are damaged.

The Teesta project was inaugurated in 1974. It is the lifeline of the North-Bengal farmers.

The Government of West-Bengal has already invested about 900 crores of rupees in the project. (ANI)
