Akram joins Miandad in criticism of 'unsporting' South African pitches

Johannesburg, Oct.1 (ANI): Following Pakistan batting advisor Javed Miandad, former captain Wasim Akram too has criticized the pitches prepared for the Champions Trophy in South Africa.

Akram said the International Cricket Council (ICC) should have prepared more lively tracks for the tournament where run scoring could have been easier.

He said such pitches certainly did not help one-day cricket, which is already fighting for its survival following the Twenty20's arrival.

"Look at the Wanderers pitch and the one at which Pakistan played on Wednesday, these pitches do not assist stroke-play," The News quoted Akram, as saying.

"The limited over game is meant for high scores. It is about giving the best entertainment to the spectators who turn up at the ground. Surprisingly barring a few matches, we have not seen pitches behaving normally," he added.

Akram backed Miandad's view regarding the unsporting pitches and said it was hard for the batsmen to score runs as those sorts of strips.

"It is hard to get runs on such tracks. The ball sometimes keeps low and sometimes rises sharply. This is not the way to popularize the game," he said.

It may be noted that Miandad had recently termed South African pitches as 'dangerous'. (ANI)
