Samoa was rocked by a political scandal in 2000 when two former cabinet ministers were handed down the death sentence for killing another politician for his threat to expose a corruption scandal. However the sentence was commuted. Samoan PM Tuila'epa Sailele Malielegaoi was elected for the second time after his Human Rights Protection Party narrowly won the 49-seat Parliamentary elections in 2001. Regretting the harsh treatment of Samoans during their colonial rule New Zealand PM Helen Clark formally apologized to the Samoans at a ceremony in Apia in 2002. The ruling HRPP party again won the Parliamentary elections in the 2006 polls bringing cheer to the PM Tuila'epa. In March 2007 Samoan Monarch Maietia Tanumafili II died at the age of 94. He was the world?s third longest reigning monarch following Thailand?s Bhumibol Adulyadej and Britain?s Queen Elizabeth.
