Recent Events and Happenings in Moldova
In 2006 January The Russian gas supplies to Moldova was cut-off by the Russian gas giant Gazprom over unpaid bills. Talks between the two resumed the gas flow.
The former Defence Minister Valery Pasat was sentenced to 10-year imprisonment due to its alleged role in illegal arms sale. Later on his imprisonment was reduced to 5 years.
In 2006 March Dniester leadership reacts angrily over new international trade laws that require all Dniester goods entering Ukraine to have Moldova customs stamp to curb smuggling.
There were street protests against a Russian decision to stop import Moldavian wine. Russia said on the basis of health ground this step is taken. But Moldavian blames the decision as politically motivated.
In 2008 March The Moldavian Prime Minister Vasile Tarlev resigns due to his plunging popularity graph and appoints deputy Prime Minister Zinaida Greceanii as the first woman PM of Moldova.
In 2008 April President Vladimir Voronin and Dniester leader Igor Smirnov hold meeting after 7 years. Both the countries agreed to restart peace talk that broke down in 2001.
In 2009 January Russia closes the supply of gas to Moldova due to disagreement over gas prices.
