2004 was an eventful year for Latvia as it was granted membership of both, NATO and EU, thus unshackling the last remaining Soviet links. In 2005 Latvia?s SS Brigade asked President Vike-Freiberga to desist from participating in the Moscow war anniversary ceremony.
The year also saw former US President George Bush visit to Riga and in the same year the Latvian Parliament ratified the controversial EU constitution. The Coalition party led by Aigars Kalvitis won the majority in the general elections.
In 2007 the PM Kalvitis had to resign owing to pressure over his sacking of the anti-corruption chief, although his coalition returned to power. Latvia?s relations with Russia suffered a setback in 2008 when it expelled a Russian diplomat over inappropriate conduct, Russia followed suit.
In 2008 Latvian Parliament approved of the EU?s Lisbon Treaty and in the same year the IMF approved a Euro 1.68 billion financial rescue package to help the ailing Latvian economy. The economic situation further worsened in the same year and saw massive protests over the issue.
