Recent Political and Economic Developments in Grenada
In the year 2004, Grenada faced a national disaster as it was hit by a hurricane named Ivan. The Grenadian Prime Minister Mitchell declared that almost 90% of the island got devastated.
Grenada previously had diplomatic ties with Taiwan and in the year 2007 it renewed its political ties with China and supported Beijing over its previous ties with Taiwan. In the same year the island got hit by Hurricane Emily leading to widespread agricultural destruction rendering many people homeless.
In the year 2008, Grenada celebrated its 34th independence anniversary and also declared Sir Eric Gairy, the former Grenadian Prime Minister as the first National hero. In the same year, Tillman Thomas of the NDC party was appointed as the Prime Minister winning 11 parliamentary seats after defeating Keith Mitchell of the New National Party.
