Recent Political and Economic Developments in Chad
After the Libyan military intervention in 1975 that lasted till 1987, democracy was ushered in Chad in 1990 when the first elections were held. A transitional government was set up in 1993 with Idriss Deby as interim president of Chad. He later won Chad?s multi-party presidential election in 1996 and his party Patriotic Salvation Movement triumphing in the 1997 legislative elections. In 2004 many Sudanese refugees spilled into Chad following the war in Sudan, in 2005 constitutional changes were made that allowed the president to stand for a third term. This was followed by military coup attempts that were however thwarted. Chad?s first oil company Societe des Hydrocarbures du Tchad was formed in 2006 to give greater control over its energy reserves. This was followed by tensions between the government and the Multinational oil firms like Chevron and Petronas over unpaid tax dues. Chad entered into an emergency in 2006 to forestall rebel attempts with consequent killings of many suspected rebel sympathisers that increasingly took the form of genocide. In 2008 the Chad and Sudanese governments signed a peace accord to halt the fiver year old hostilities, which couldn?t last however and the two countries cut off their diplomatic ties in May 2008.
