Recent Developments and Elections in Benin
Benin has border disputes with its neighbour Burkina Faso whom Benin accuses of distorting the boundary line and also it has disputes with Togo regarding maritime claims.
In the year 2002, Benin was included into the Community of Sahel-Saharan States. While in 2004, Benin and Nigeria mutually agreed on restating and demarcating their boundary lines and thus boost their maritime relations too.
In the year 2006, Benin along with other less developed countries was exempted from repaying its debt owed to World Bank and African Development Bank following the relief granted at G8 nations summit at Gleneagles, Scotland.
In the year 2007, the parliamentary elections were won by President Yayi?s coalition and in the same year, he led thousands of his supporters to protest against entrenched corruption.
