The Use of British Control at the Turks and Caicos Islands
The Turks and Caicos Islands are officially run by the United Kingdom. The Turks and Caicos Islands is one of the largest British overseas territories in that the islands are home to more than thirty thousand people. The islands have tried to become independent in the past though. The British still run the country though.
The Turks and Caicos Islands became territories of the United Kingdom in the middle of the twentieth century. This occurred after Jamaica declared its independence and the Turks and Caicos Islands ended up splitting off of Jamaica.
The Turks and Caicos Islands were operated with a separate control that was different from what the British use. However, the independence that the Turks and Caicos Islands had was limited. Independence was declared in 1982 but was declined.
This prompted the Turks and Caicos Islands to actually look towards Canada for assistance. The islands attempted to contact Canada to see about a possible union but Canada was not overly concerned at the time. There had been a few other attempts from individual provinces in Canada to try and reach out to the Turks and Caicos Islands. However, it is not clear as to whether or not the country will try to get a union set up any time later.
The British control over the Turks and Caicos Islands has prompted the country to use the same legal system that is used in the United Kingdom. This includes the process of the governor of the Turks and Caicos Islands being appointed by Queen Elizabeth II.
There is one interesting thing about the British control over the Turks and Caicos Islands. The British pound is not the official currency of the Turks and Caicos Islands. The American dollar is the official currency instead. This has proven to be especially useful for the large number of Americans who flock to the islands each year.
