Somalia Facing Major Changes
In terms of natural resources, Somalia does not have much to work with. There is a small fishing industry that adds to the revenue of the government plus helps the locals with their incomes and food source. In the north, they catch shark, tuna, and various other types of warm-water fish. This has been affected by poaching however and has made it more difficult for the locals to make a living.
There have been some changes in the economy which have made the country more dependent on foreign remittances. The main form of wealth in the area is the livestock that a family owns such as cattle, sheep, goats, and camels. There used to be a larger export industry focused on these animals but there have been periodic bans due to concerns over the health of the animals.
Somalia has encountered many troubles brought on by droughts. This has hampered both the agricultural and the livestock sides of the economy. Most farming on a regular basis or at least on a more consistent basis is found near the coastline. Any other areas only receive small amounts of rainfall ? not enough to keep the farms going productively.
The country has deposits of minerals such as uranium as well as deposits of petroleum and natural gas may be worked in the favor of Somalia. However the exploration of the petroleum deposits stopped because of the instability in the nation. In the following years, if this can change, there might be some revenue brought in through these resources.
There are other problems that the country is facing. It lacks a central government and many groups have found it profitable to counterfeit the currency which in effect has quickly debased the value of it. There are a lot of obstacles to overcome for Somalia and they really need some major changes for their economy to work.
