Mali Still Relying on Foreign Aid to Survive
Mali ranks as one of the poorest countries in the world and in fact is in the bottom ten. There is potential wealth in the country that when tapped into can possibly change the way that the country is going but that still needs to happen. This potential wealth lies in mining, fishing, raising livestock, and producing various agricultural commodities.
At the moment, agriculture takes up almost three quarters of the labor force of the country. It also provides one third of the GDP. Most of the revenue from exports comes from cotton, livestock and gold. The families in Mali rely on their small farms for much of their livelihoods and for their own sustenance. These farms grow millet, sorghum, and maize.
Any subsidies that the government would normally give out to families to help them survive have been cut drastically. The government has been affected by the high cost of petroleum products as well as falling prices for gold and cotton. There has been a large loss of revenue because of this and has placed a lot of pressure on the economy. The government has had to be very budget wise, even to extremes.
The climate of Mali gives way for crops of rice and sorghum, especially along the coasts of the Niger River. Other crops have severely suffered over time because of some bad years. Policy restraints on grain products have also curbed the crops. After the drought in the early 1970?s, this country has had to work hard in increasing their numbers of livestock but it has happened over time.
To help out Mali with the reforms that the government is undertaking to change the economy pertaining to agriculture and other sections, Western countries have donated funds. They have received loans from the IMF and donations from the World Bank. At the moment, in order for these changes to happen, this country has to rely on such funds. This will be until at least the changes start to take place and results begin to appear.
