More detail about Laos

Laos Operates as a Communist State

Laos is one of only five countries in today?s world that operate as a communist nation. The country has been operating under communist rule since 1975. In fact, the country has only been accepting support from other countries for a little over twenty years.

Laos functions with only one political party in mind. This is the Lao People?s Revolutionary Party. There is no pressure between different groups in Laos. This is a feature that is similar to what is found in other countries.

However, there is some control with regards to who can run for office. The communist government of Laos does offer elections every five years. Members of the legislative branch of Laos are determined by the people of Laos.

The big concern is that the executive branch is not well controlled by the public. People that were elected by the public in the legislative branch will be the ones who are responsible for electing prime ministers and presidents among all of the other major political points.

Laos has been relatively late to the private enterprise field. It had been operating with strict control to ensure that no outside influences are held in Laos. However, Laos became a decentralized nation in 1986. This has helped Laos to grow in size over the past few decades.

Laos has even grown to support a substantial high speed rail project. This project is being developed alongside China to help support a sense of community and connection to the two countries. It should be noted that China, like Laos, operates as a communist country.

Overall, Laos is more open to the suggestions and support of other countries than some other countries that have operated under communist rule. This is especially the case with regards to how Laos compares to a country with tighter controls over its people, North Korea.
