More detail about French Southern Territories
French Southern Territories a Military Boom
The French Southern Territories, also known as the French Southern and Antarctic
Lands are a group of volcanic islands not connected to the French Antarctique,
the Brazilian French colony. These territories lack any kind of permanent
inhabitant. The individuals that live there are mostly those that work in the
military. Aside from the military personnel, there are also scientific
researchers, support staff and civilian officials that reside there.
These territories have two main agricultural industries and those are both to do
with the ocean. They have decent natural resource stemming from fish and
crustaceans. The most popular of these are the Patagonian toothfish and the
spiny lobster. Unfortunately, these are both poached by various foreign fishing
boats which have in the past been arrested for such activities.
The poaching has resulted in the government placing heavy restrictions for
individuals involved in the industry. Only a few small fishing boats are
normally granted the rights to fish for these creatures. There are other
industries involved in picking up the economy. These include servicing various
geophysical and meteorological research stations and the French fleeting ships
as well as other fleets of ships.
The area does have a large marine fleet that has five cargo ships, seven bulk
carriers, ten chemical tankers, six liquefied gas carriers, nine container
ships, one refrigerated cargo ship, 24 petroleum tankers, and ten
roll-on/roll-off carriers, otherwise known as RORO.
The French Southern Territories are an interesting region that is quite
beautiful however it is only being developed at the moment to serve military
purposes. This will have an effect on the economy as it is so closely linked
with that of France. In most cases, the economy does serve its purposes but
there is little left to use as a resource to grow or expand the economy due to
the lack of natural resources and the lack of development in other possible
industries.
