Netherlands Antilles: Overseas Territory of the Netherlands in the Caribbean

In the beginning of the 16th century the Spanish were the first to discover the islands of Netherlands Antilles, which was inhabited by the Arawaks and Caribs. After a few decades the Netherlands Antilles became a Spanish colony. In the 17th century the Dutch captured the island and its was turned into a base camp for slave trade. In 1863 slavery was abolished and monarchy of the Netherlands was established in the Netherlands Antilles. The construction of oil refineries to service the Venezuelan oil fields has accelerated the economy of the Netherlands Antilles
