Nauru: The World's Smallest Island Nation and Independent Republic

The exact origins of the Nauruans are unclear, but in 1798 the British navigators were the first to visit this island. In 1888 Germany took over this island from British domination for phosphate mining. The island of Nauru was under joint administration of Australia, New Zealand, and Britain after World War I. The Japanese occupied the island during World War II and forced 1,200 Nauruans to relocate themselves. . In 1947 Nauru became a UN trusteeship administered by Australia. By 1967 the phosphate mining industry came under the control of Nauruans. In1968, Nauru became one of the world's smallest independent republics. The phosphate mining bestowed Nauru with the world’s highest per capita incomes, however as Nauru’s phosphate stores began to run out the Nauru Island was reduced to an environmental wasteland.
