1 in 4 Brits prefers tablet PC to laptops

London, Fri, 02 Apr 2010 ANI

London, April 2 (ANI): One in four Britons would swap his or her heavy and expensive laptops for a cheaper and easy-to-use tablet PC, a new independent survey has revealed.

While the poll, conducted by Kelkoo UK, saw 40 per cent people saying they would rather use a tablet PC such as Apple's iPad than a laptop, about a quarter of the respondents were unaware of the purpose of an iPad.

Of the 23 per cent of people who didn't know what the iPad was designed to do, 2 per cent thought it was a mobile phone, 8 per cent took it to be an iPod while 13 per cent had no idea at all.

The iPad, which looks like a large Apple iPhone, has been designed to give the user a paper-like reading experience. It also enables a user to browse the web and comes complete with Apple software like iTunes and the iPhone applications.

However, not all customers are eager to get their hands on the iPad.

Of those who thought the iPad would not be so popular with buyers, a fifth said consumers would wait for improved second generation to hit the market, 23 per cent felt its functionality was quite limited at present and 32 per cent felt the gadget had no use at present.

On the other hand 15 per cent said they wanted to own an iPad no matter what its price was.

Moreover, 18 per cent of people said they wanted to buy an iPad because Apple was 'cool'.

"It is rumoured that the launch of the company's latest brainchild, the iPad, could equally turn around the fortunes of the struggling tablet PC market by redefining the category as a premium multi-touch entertainment product, and in so doing, pave the way for other manufacturers to follow in their footsteps," Sky News quoted Bruce Fair, Managing Director of Kelkoo UK, as saying.

Fair added: "The iPad certainly has the potential to cannibalise the sale of other less versatile products such as MP3 players, or e-readers like Amazon's Kindle.

"Some people really can't wait to be seen with the latest technology but in the case of this new Apple product patience really could be a virtue.

"The functionality of the first generation has its limitations and this will be a deal breaker for some. Sometimes, second generation products offer improved functionality at the same price and can be worth the wait." (ANI)
