New Delhi/ Thiruvananthapuram/ Ahmedabad/ Kolkata, March 29 (ANI): India was engulfed in darkness as citizens across the country switched off their lights in a bid to mark the Earth Hour late on Saturday night. Earth Hour, the symbolic one-hour switch-off, first held in Sydney in 2007, has become an annual global event. In capital New Delhi, the presidential palace, Rashtrapati Bhavan, and the accompanying secretariat were in sudden darkness. Few kilometres away, the famous temple Akshardham followed suit. People came out in droves at a beach in Thiruvananthapuram city holding candles as they observed the hour. The night was accompanied by a musical event. In Ahmedabad city, priests and devotees lit candles in temples. In Kolkata, residents witnessed famous Indian Museum unplug its lights. Earth Hour is a World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) initiative symbolising the collective power of individuals, businesses and governments to reduce our impact on this planet. Every year Earth Hour is observed towards the end of March and during this hour landmarks in thousands of cities turn off their power to promote a sustainable future for the planet.
