Flood-like situation renders thousands homeless in Jalpaiguri

Jalpaiguri, July 03 (ANI): A flood-like situation caused by heavy torrential rains has left thousands of villagers homeless in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district.Hundreds of homes in several villages of Jalpaiguri district were washed away when excess water in the Teesta River overflew following heavy rains in the hilly regions of the state. More than 5000 people in the district are estimated to be affected by the disaster, with most of them losing their homes and farmlands in the process. Indian Army has deployed eight teams in various flooded areas in the district and rescued several affected villagers, providing medical aid to them. Officials however said that the water level was receding and the situation was now under control with many affected villagers being moved to safe places. Jalpaiguri is estimated to have received more than 250mm rainfall in the last few days.
