Army assists in relief and rescue operation in flood-hit West Bengal

Jalpaiguri, Aug 31 (ANI): Indian army was called to assist the local administration in relief and rescue work in West Bengal after heavy rains created flood-like situation. More than 10,000 people have been affected due to the continuous rain in Jalpaiguri district of the state after heavy rains flooded many villages. Army built up temporary embankments with the help of villagers to halt soil erosion and prevent water from entering into residential areas. Many houses were destroyed in the flood and local residents didn't have access to food and drinking water now. The government had set up relief camps, with supply of food and medicines, across the state where affected residents were seeking shelter. Annual monsoon season is vital for India as half of its cropland lacks irrigation. The rains support two-thirds of India's 1.25 billion populations who live in rural areas and rely on farming. But excessive rains cause many problems such as floods, landslides and water-borne diseases.
