Rekha is considered as one of the finest actresses of Bollywood and has acted in more than 180 films in her career. She was a prominent actress in 70's and 80's. In 2012 she took oath as a Rajya Sabha member.

Rekha was born on 10 October 1954 in Madras to Gemini Ganesan and Pushpavalli. His father is a famous Tamil actor while her mother is a famous Telugu actress. She lives in Bandra in Mumbai.

She started her film career at a very young age and had to go through a lot of trouble in the beginning. She started her career in 1966 in Rangula Ratnam as a child actor.

She made her Bollywood debut as an actress with Sawan Badho. Her pair with Amitabh Bachchan was a hit and they acted in several blockbuster films together. Silsila was their last film together. She married Mukesh Agarwal in 1990 but he committed suicide in 1991.

She has won 3 Filmfare Awards: Best Actress for Khubsoorat and Khoon Bhari Maang, Best Supporting Actress for Khiladiyon ka Khiladi. In 2003 she was awarded Lifetime Achievement award. She also received a National Film award for Umrao Jaan.

She was awarded Padma Shri in 2010
