Manmohan Sing was born on 26 September 1932 to Gurmikh Singh and Amrit Kaur in Gah, Punjab (now in Pakistan). He is married to Gursharan Kaur and has 3 children Upinder, Daman and Amrit.

He has following degrees:

1. BA (Hons.) in Economics from Punjab University in 1952
2. MA First Class in Economics, from Punjab University in 1954
3. Honors degree in Economics from St John's College of University of Cambridge in 1957
