During the pre historic times the Hal-Saflieni Hypogeum settled in Malta and later on it was home to several mighty empires like the Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, and Romans. Arab rule began in A.D. 870 and the Normans of Sicily occupied it in 1090 AD. The conquest of Malta went on, first by Turks in 1565, French in 1798 and Britain in 1814. In both the World Wars Malta remained a part of Britain and even after its independence in 1964 it became a member of the British Commonwealth. After a decade it became a independent nation.
