Celtic tribes arrived on the island of Ireland between 600-150 B.C. Invasions by Norsemen began in the late 8th century and finally ended when King Brian Boru defeated the Danes in 1014. English invaded Ireland in the 12th century and remained there for more than seven centuries. Decade long Anglo-Irish struggle marked by fierce rebellions and harsh repressions led by the Irish people against foreign rule. Several years of guerrilla warfare resulted in independence from the UK in 1921. In 1948 Ireland withdrew from the British Commonwealth and joined the European Community in 1973.

The combined panel of British and Irish government started reframing St. Andrews Agreement in order to have long lasting peace settlement with Northern Ireland.

Ireland is the third largest island in Europe, and the twentieth-largest island in the world. It lies to the northwest of continental Europe and is surrounded by hundreds of islands and islets. Ireland is situated in the Atlantic Ocean and separated from Great Britain by the Irish Sea.
