Asthma is a common chronic inflammatory condition that leads to the swelling and narrowing of airways of the lungs resulting in wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing.

However, the symptoms of asthma vary from person to person and can also vary in the same person from time to time. But some generic symptoms that can be characterized are:

Cough with or without phlegm.

Shortness of breath with exertion especially at night

Wheezing with a whistling or hissing sound while exhaling.

Coughing may be chronic and usually worse at night and during the early morning, and may occur after doing physical exercise or when exposed to cold, dry air.

Chest tightness may occur.

The major causes for asthma can be:

The major reason for asthma is genetic factors.

Weather conditions and pollution.
Allergy because of pet animals like dogs, cats and bird (pet hair or dander).

Some medicines like Aspirin and Beta blockers cause Asthma in some people.

Tobacco smoke and burning smoke containing harmful gases like

Respiratory infections, such as the common cold Nitrogen Dioxide, Sulphur Dioxide, Carbon monoxide etc.

Asthma can affect persons of any group and basically there is no hard and fast treatment available for asthma in the modern medicine but by taking some preventive measures you can reduce the symptoms of asthma to an extent. Proper self-management and medical treatment is the only answer to asthma. Healthy lifestyle, food habits and proper prevention from the allergens can help you to fight with asthma. Avoid taking too much stress and tension. In addition to that, yoga and meditation could prove beneficial.
