University of Madras is situated in Chennai (formerly Madras) in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. This university can be referred as one of the few oldest universities in India

The university was founded in the year 1857. The university believes in the motto of learning promotes natural talent. As a great number of students are enrolled in the various programs the university can boast of being one of largest universities in India in terms of students.

The university has six centers in Chennai. The University of Madras has more than 50 departments. The university has been given five star statuses by NAAC. In addition to regular programs the university also runs a host of distance learning programs through its pan India network. The university has a host of autonomous and non- autonomous colleges affiliated to it.

The University of Madras also boasts of an array of great achievers. You can find its alumni successful in different fields of life. The university has produced two noble laureates namely C. V. Raman and S. Chandrasekhar. India?s first governor General Chakravarthi Rajagopalachari was also alumnus of this university. The University of Madras has also produced five presidents. In addition to this, there are a large number of students of this university holding respectable positions.
