One can say that the council is entrusted with the task of looking after the quality of medical education in India in the form of granting recognition to medical colleges and their degrees, giving accreditation to medical colleges, and granting registration to the medical practitioners in India. In recent year the task of registering foreign medical practitioners has also been entrusted to the medical council of India.

The institution called MCI was formed in the year 1934 under the Indian Medical Council Act, 1933. After independence the council was reconstituted Indian Medical Council Act, 1956 replacing former act. The council was recently in news due charges of corruption.
