Dr. Farooq Abdullah: Our mother tongue is our identity

“Our Mother tongue is our identity. It is necessary that we should know how to read, write and speak our language. We should respect our language. If we do not respect our languages, we will not be able to unite India. Our languages are our identity and we should preserve them,” said Dr. Farooq Abdullah, Hon’ble Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy while releasing eight NBT books in Kashmiri language in Hall No. 8, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. On this occasion, Shri Sharifuddin Shariq, Member of Parliament of Jammu & Kashmir, Shr O N Kaul, noted linguist, Shri Aziz Hazmi, well-known author, Shri A Sethumadhavan and Dr M A Sikandar, Director NBT were also present. Dr Abdullah also visited the Theme Pavilion and Kids-Bubble at the Fair.

Afro-Asian Book Council organized a discussion on print books and upcoming trend of e-books in the Afro-Asian region. Mr G V G Krishna Murthy, former Election Commissioner was the chief guest on the occasion. Mr A Sethumadhavan, Chairman, NBT; Dr M A Sikandar, Director, NBT and Mr. Ramachandran were awarded by the Council for their contribution in promoting books and reading culture in the region.  Mr Vijaythayappa, newly appointed chairman of Afro-Asian Council, Dr Dayo Alabi, Mr S K Khurana, Dr Terry O’brien among others were present on the occasion.

A Seminar on E-publishing was organized in Auditorium, Hall No. 7 where deliberations were made regarding e-publishing and e-marketing in relevance to Indian scenario. Mr Kailash Balan, Mr Sudhir Malhotra, Dr Haralz Henzler among others participated in the seminar.

A lively interaction with children on the topic What do you want to read? was organized by NBT in association with Lekhika Sangh at the Theme Pavilion, Hall No. 7E. Noted authors and litterateurs working in the field of children’s literature including Dr Madhu Pant, Ms Vibha Devsare, Ms. Neera Verma, Ms. Swaran Prabha, Ms. Shipra, Ms. Susheel Sharma, Ms. Seema, Shri Rajeev Tambe were present on the occasion. The programme was moderated by young writer, Shri Anjum Sharma. In this interaction, the children shared their views on children’s literature, current trends in the literature and e-books. They said that they wish to read books on imaginary world and characters, books with illustrations and books that help them improve their skills.

A panel discussion on the topic Importance of Research and Networking in TYA (Theatre for the Young Audience) was organized by NBT in association with Assitej India at the Theme Pavilion.  Prof. Dr. Manon van de Water, University of Wisconsin, USA, was the guest speaker on the occasion. She talked about the importance of theatre as an educational tool for children. She said that theatre deepens the understanding of self, others, foster creativity, connects students to each other and transforms the learning environment. She further added that it also helps enhance skills and understand the socio-cultural issues. Prof. Poonam Batra also spoke on the occasion. The programme was moderated by renowned theatre personality Shri Faizal Alkazi.

Kendriya Vidyalaya, Rajokri in association with NBT organized a workshop on How to write a graphic novel/comic? for children in the Theme Pavilion. In this workshop, children were given tips to create comics. They were told that developing a comic or a graphic novel is not difficult even if you are not good at drawing the only basic required is imagination. The Dastangoi Performance by Ms Poonam Girdhani and Fauzia enthralled the audience.  An interaction with the author Ms. Bina Kapoor and illustrator Ms. Priya Kurien was also organized at the theme pavilion.

Satyagraha: An Exploration of Polish Poetics was organized at the Polish Pavilion. The poetic session was chaired by Shri Ashok Vajpeyi. Polish poets Czelaw MIitosz, Adam Zagajewski, Zbigniew Herbert, Wislawa Szymborska, Magdelena Heydel, Michal Rusinek and Jecek Dehnel rendered their poems.
At the Authors’ Corner, Ms Hemu Agarwal, Vimal Kumar, Suresh Kohli, Ishita Agarwal and other well-known authors interacted with the book lovers and discussed about their books. At lekhak Manch renowned authors Suresh Awasthi, Alok Puranic, Ashok Chakradhar, Prem Janmejey, Narendra Kohli , Pradeep Pant, Ravindra Kalia among others made an appearance.

Discussions on the topic Yatharth Ya Mithak Ke Bich Bhartiya Upanyas and Aaj Ki Kahaniyan were organized in Sahitya Manch in Hall No. 8 in which speakers were Kashinath Singh, Pankaj Pavan, Abhinav and Vinod Tiwari and Sanjay Kumar, Rattan Singh, Khalled Javed among others participated.
Children from various schools participated in activities like collage making, flower making etc in Kids Bubble.
