London, May 16 (ANI): Former England cricketer Chris Lewis told a court yesterday he was shocked when Customs officers told him he had cocaine in his bag.

Lewis, 41, and pal Chad Kirnon, 27, a professional basketball player, were stopped at Gatwick airport when they returned from St Lucia last December.

Surrey all-rounder Lewis said Kirnon had given him five tins of fruit juice to put in his cricket bag, but had no idea it contained liquid cocaine.

According to The Sun, he told Croydon Crown Court, South London: "When the officer said, 'This isn't juice, it is cocaine', I thought it must be some mistake."

Lewis, from Brent, North London, and Kirnon, of Islington, North London, deny drug smuggling. The trial continues. (ANI)
