Punjab's differently-able boy eager to earn glory in badminton world

Telupura (Ferozepur), May 15 (ANI): Determined to achieve success in life, a village boy here is all set to bring glory to his village and country through sports despite being physically challenged.

A resident of Telupura village of Ferozepur district in Punjab, Sanjeev Kumar, 18, is a remarkable badminton player.

He has been selected for the 9th German International BMW 3, Wheelchair Badminton Tournament.

Fifteen players would be selected in this tournament from across the country to play badminton.

Sanjeev gave a great performance in the 2nd Asian Para Olympic Cup, a badminton tournament held recently in Bangalore.

He maintains that the physically challenged should not feel disabled but try to be confident enough to be equal to those who are physically fit.

"Even after being physically disabled, I am playing (badminton) on the international level to make my country, region and parents feel proud of me.want those who are physically disabled not to feel helpless but try to match with the physically fit people so that they can also prove themselves, " said Sanjeev Kumar.

The family's financial limitation did pose a major hindrance in Sanjeev's way. The family sought govt. support and some private companies. Some people did come forward to support him.

Varinder Kumar, father of Sanjeev Kumar feels proud of his son's confidence and will power and hopes to receive support from the government.

"I request the government to encourage all the physically disabled children towards games so that it motivates other such children," said Varinder Kumar.

Sanjeev has not only been selected for the Wheelchair Badminton Tournament but also acquired 6th position in the 2nd Asian Para Olympic Cup. By Avtar Gill (ANI)
