An Indian couple here is calling upon the Indian authorities to impose a travel ban on their once friend and neighbour in Kerala, who they claim harassed the woman by creating her fake profile with personal details seeking for pleasure.

Thomas and his wife have recently sent a complaint to the DGP of Kerala to launch a nationwide manhunt to catch Abhilash Kuriakose.

It all started last year, when Thomas’s wife, (who refused to disclose her name) was six months pregnant and was shocked to learn that her picture, contact numbers and other details were all posted on an Orkut profile without her consent stating appointments for sex.

“It was terrible as I used to receive several calls in the night from men from Qatar, Dubai asking for sex. I was pregnant it was tough for my husband to go through this situation. My pictures were posted with my husband’s details as my pimp,” the wife said.

The couple mentioned in their complaint that the husband’s acquaintance, who was in Bahrain used the fake profile and joined several Indian associations and online communities here which further worsened the situation for the couple.

“We were scared to step outside our home fearing public ridicule. We also decided to commit suicide as there was no end to this ongoing harassment for us. He destroyed our family and circle of friends,” Mrs. Thomas said.

The couple contacted the Bahrain Criminal Investigations Department last year who investigated the case and tracked down Kuriakose through the IP address he was using.

The Bahraini court sentenced the accused to one year but he had fled the country before the verdict was announced. In addition, complaints were also filed with the Director of Ministry and Information Press and Publication here seeking that access to the networking site be banned in the Kingdom.

“We were looking at the option of banning the social networking site in Bahrain. But that was not the solution as the man who ruined our life was out there in the open,” Mrs Thomas said.

The couple have also submitted copies of the scrapbook of the profile account with vulgar language, telephones recordings and other proof which has been sent to the Kerala Police for their investigation. The Indian embassy in Bahrain is also following up the case with relevant Indian authorities to track down Kuriakose.

Mrs. Thomas said she was informed by the Kerala police last week, that they went to search the Kuriakose’s house in Vazhakulam’s Ernakulam District but he was not present. The wife said she was informed by sources in her area that he was presently in Bangalore and was planning to go the US.

“He is got the power of money to get away with things. I appeal to the Indian authorities to nab him and impose a travel ban so that he does not leave the country. But if he does, we will follow him till he is put behind bars,” she said.

Indians are the largest foreign population in Bahrain representing close to 300,000 nationals.
