BJP leader shot dead in Chhattisgarh

National,Politics, Tue, 05 May 2009 IANS

Raipur, May 5 (IANS) Three unidentified assailants shot dead a senior leader of Chhattisgarh's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Tuesday, police said.

The assailants pumped three bullets into Darbar Singh Mandawi, 40, in a remote area of Rajnandgaon district, some 130 km west of capital Raipur. Mandawi had unsuccessfully contested assembly polls as BJP nominee from the Manpur Mohla assembly segment.

'The assailants, who were in the late 30s, had some snacks at the BJP leader's residence and then took him to a nearby area and shot him dead,' district superintendent of police V.K. Choubey told IANS.

Rajnandgaon is one of the worst-Maoist-hit districts of the state where insurgents had killed five polling officers April 16 when the state went to the Lok Sabha polls.

Police are not ruling out the possibility of Maoists' involvement in the case, Choubey said.
