Campaigning for first phase of poll ends in Jharkhand

Ranchi, April 14 (IANS) Campaigning ended Tuesday in six of Jharkhand's 14 Lok Sabha seats where polling will be held April 16, with the stage set for a triangular or multi-cornered contest on all the seats.

 

A total of 7,068,696 voters will decide the fate of 85 candidates in the fray, including former external affairs minister Yashwant Sinha and former coal minister Karia Munda, both contesting on Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) tickets, from Hazaribagh and Khuti, respectively.

 

 

The other key contestants are the state's first chief minister and Jharkhand Vikas Morcha-Prajatantrik (JVM-P) president Babulal Marandi from Koderma and former assembly speaker and Janata Dal-United (JD-U) rebel Inder Singh Namdhari from Chatra as an independent candidate.

 

 

The other two seats where polling will take place are Palamau and Lohardagga.

 

 

In view of the Maoist threat, the time of voting in all six Lok Sabha seats has been changed -- between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. A total of 9,953 polling stations have been set up and 1,800 micro observers have been pressed into services for the first phase of polling.
