Man throws two daughters into a canal in Ghaziabad

National, Wed, 25 Mar 2009 IANS

Ghaziabad, March 25 (IANS) A 32-year-old father of five allegedly threw two of his minor daughters into a canal here, police said Wednesday.

According to the police, Vinod, a small time retailer, in an inebriated condition took his two daughters, Monika, 9, and Manisha, 5, for a stroll Tuesday evening and pushed them into a canal in Murad Nagar area of this national capital suburb.

While Manisha was saved by passers-by, Monika is feared drowned as she has not been traced till Wednesday night.

'Vinod, in his confession, told us that he had dumped his two daughters into the Murad Nagar canal,' Senior Superintendent of Police Akhil Kumar said.

The police said Vinod had a dispute with his wife Mamta, 28, that led him to commit the crime.

Mamta, however, denied that there was any dispute between the two. She said the family's financial condition was bad as her husband's work was not going well.

'My husband had tried to set things right but they did not go as desired,' she said.

A priest of a nearby temple, who did not wish to be named, said that Vinod used to visit him often and seek his blessings. He was apparently troubled over the fact that he had five daughters and no son.

'A number of times, he asked me to suggest ways to have a son. He might have made a human sacrifice of his two daughters in order to have a son,' the priest said.
