India beat West Indies in women's world cup

Sydney, March 19 (IANS) Indian women's team beat West Indies by eight wickets to make it to the third place play-off in the cricket world cup here Friday.

 

Indian leg-spinner Priyanka Roy took a career-best four for 14 to bowl out West Indies for just 84 runs. India then chased down the total in only 17.5 overs.

 

 

India will take on Australia for the third place play-off Saturday.

 

 

Five West Indies' batsmen were dismissed for ducks, starting with captain Merissa Aguilleira, who was caught off Rumeli Dhar in the fourth over. Opener Stafanie Taylor (29) and Pamela Lavine (20) added 45 for the second wicket but the rest of the batting faded away. The last six wickets fell for 12 runs.

 

 

Sulakshana Naik (39 not out) and Mithali Raj (33 not out) helped India reach the target in 17.5 overs.

 

 

In another Super Six match, New Zealand's Suzie Bates scored a breathtaking 168 to script a mammoth 223 run victory against Pakistan. New Zealand will play England in the title clash.

 

 

Bates completely overshadowed a maiden century by captain Haidee Tiffen, as she destroyed Pakistan with an awesome batting display.

 

 

The 21-year-old from Dunedin belted six sixes and 19 fours in 105 balls. Together with Tiffen (100) she put on a record 262 runs for the second wicket as New Zealand posted a mammoth 373-7 in 50 overs.

 

 

Pakistan was bowled out for 150 in 48.1 overs. For Pakistan, opener Nain Abidi top scored with 52 while New Zealand's Lucy Doolan bagged 3-30.
