Porbandar, Feb 27 (ANI): Terming all belongings of Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation, a national heritage, residents of Porbandar on Friday opposed the auction of Mahatma Gandhi's personal belongings, which is due next month in New York.

The proposed sale has dismayed the Gandhians in Porbandar, as they believe it goes against the philosophy of a man who shunned material possessions and led an ascetic life.

The pair of the famed metal-rimmed spectacles, a pocket watch and sandals of Gandhi are scheduled to be auctioned.

"We strongly oppose the sale of items of Gandhiji's through auction next month in New York. We believe that these items are of national heritage and these should not be sold," said Babubhai, a Gandhian.

The residents have demanded intervention by the Government of India and new President of the US, Barack Obama for the respect of Mahatma.

"Any belonging of the Father of our Nation, is of national heritage. If it is auctioned then it is an insult to us. Gandhi's strong supporter Obama must understand our emotions and those items should be brought back. We want our Government to take initiative and bring those items back," said Surekha Shah, another Gandhian.

According to certain reports a great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, is appealing to Indian people for money to buy some of the leader's personal belongings from New York auction.

The auction is scheduled to be happen in March 4 and 5. (ANI)
