Kolkata, Jan 24 (IANS) Prime Minister Mnamohan Singh's sisters were among those who took part in prayer meetings in gurdwaras across the city Saturday for the success of his heart surgery.

The two sisters - Preetam Kaur and Naveen Kaur - participated in the prayers at the Taratala gurdwara of South Kolkata.

'We were very tense about his well-being. So we went to the gurdwara and did sangat and aardas (special Sikh prayer meeting),' said Naveen.

Manmohan Singh was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi Friday for a heart surgery Saturday. Doctors at the hospital said the surgery was successful and his condition was stable after an operation that went on for nearly eight hours.

Naveen was relieved after learning that the surgery was successful and the prime minister was well.

'So far I have not been able to contact our family members in New Delhi after the surgery. But I am thankful to God for the success of the surgery,' she said.

The state Congress organised an all-faith prayer meeting at the Garcha gurdwara in South Kolkata.

People from different faiths took part in the prayers alongside senior Congress leaders Manas Bhuniya and Pradip Bhattacharya.
