Gumla (Jharkhand), Dec 26 (ANI): A literacy campaign launched in Jharkhand is hugely successful among the marginalised section of women, as it has enabled them to take care of their local problems.
The campaign run by the literacy committee has empowered many women in the rea. These literate women now play an active role in making decisions on issues that govern their every day life.
The campaign has brought about a tremendous change in their life style.
"Under the literacy campaign 100 women became literate. Around 15 men also learnt how to read and write. After the success of this campaign the residents adopted a lot of good things. They understood the importance of cleanliness and started sending their children to schools. The women made an effort to stop illegal sale of liquor," said Baghambar Oddhar, Secretary, Literacy Committee, Gumla.
They are now vigilant about maintaining cleanliness in their area and make sure their children go to schools.
"I did not know how to read and write. But now I have learnt a bit. Now we are sending our children to school," said Mani Devi, a resident.
Having realised the importance of education in their lives, these women now hope for some more help from the government so that they are able to lead a life at par with other communities. (ANI)
