London, December 20 (ANI): Puerto Rican actor Benicio del Toro has revealed that he sees shades of Jesus Christ in the world-renowned guerilla fighter Che Guevara - viewed by many as a ruthless executioner who practiced brutal militarism for many years.
Guevara, the Argentinean Marxist revolutionary, became a counter-culture symbol worldwide in specifically political contexts and as a wide-ranging popular icon of youthful rebellion.
Over forty years past his execution, many people have come to hail the politician-author as a hero, for his many accomplishments, such as those during the Cuban revolution - a theme explored in Che: Part 1 and Che: Part 2.
Conversely, others view him as a spokesman for a failed ideology and as a tormenter who supported an actual system of tyranny, reports the Sun.
However, the Oscar-winning Del Toro rebuffed such allegations and compared the guerrilla leader to Jesus Christ, saying: "I think Che had perseverance and morality.
"Being the underdog and fighting against injustice and standing up for the forgotten moved him so hard. Kind of like Jesus, in a way - only Jesus would turn the other cheek. Che wouldn't."
The actor further added that anyone supporting a Guevara T-shirt would be in his good books.
He said: "I think anyone who buys a T-shirt of Che has gotta be cool. If I see someone with a Che T-shirt, I think, 'He's got good taste'." (ANI)
