The Gujarat government on Tuesday offered a cause of rejoicing to its nearly nine lakh employees by announcing the implementation of the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations in its existing ‘approved’ form from April 2009.

Interacting to media Tapan Ray, the Secretary of Economic Affairs under the Ministry of Finance told: ‘state government is in strong position to bear the additional burden of whooping Rs.9,000-crore in terms of paying arrears and increased salary and will ‘face no difficulty in implementing the Sixth Pay Commission’s recommendations.’

He, however, declined to comment the way of shouldering this additional burden on state exchequer.

The decision of approval was taken jointly by an established committee headed by State Finance Minister Vajubhai Vala and representatives of various employees union before the state cabinet.

According to the approved proposal, the revised pay will be implemented from April 2009, which would be effective retrospectively from January 1, 2006.

The increased salary will be paid in cash from April 2009 while the arrears- the difference between the revise salary and distributed salary- will be deposited in the Provident Fund account of the employees in the next five years, sources said.

But this time government has decided to not to grant the transportation allowance (TA) and education allowance (EA) to their employees which may bring some cause of protest.

The state exchequer would have to bear extra burden of Rs. 6,000-crore in terms of arrears and Rs.3,000-crore per annum in terms of salary increment, official said.
