15 legislators managed fourth consecutive term in Delhi

New Delhi, Dec 8 (IANS) Fifteen Delhi legislators have been lucky enough to be elected for a fourth consecutive term.

These include eight from the Congress and five from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), according to the election results declared Monday.

The four-time winners also include one each two who quit from the Congress and the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S).

The Congress legislators included Delhi assembly Speaker Choudhary Prem Singh, who has never lost an election since 1958 and created a world record for winning from the same constituency, Ambedkar Nagar in south Delhi. In 1958 and 1962, he was elected to the Municipal Corporation; in 1967, 1972, 1977 and 1983 to the Metropolitan Council; in 1993, 1998, 2003 and now in 2008 to the Delhi assembly.

Delhi Transport Minister Haroon Yusuf from Ballimaran, Finance minister A.K. Walia from Laxmi nagar and Urban Development Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan from Mongolpuri have also won elections in 1993, 1998, 2003 and 2008.

Congress lawmaker Mukesh, who shifted his constituency to Uttam Nagar following delimitation, had won the Hasthal assembly seat thrice earlier.

Pervez Hashmi, the legislator from Okhla constituency, which came into limelight following the Sep 19 Jamia Nagar shootout, also won the seat for the fourth consecutive term.

Other Congress sitting legislators securing victories for the fourth time are Chaudhary Mateen Ahmed from Seelampur and Balram Tanwar from Chhatarpur.

Deputy Speaker Shoaib Iqbal, who quit the JD-S recently, also registered the fourth continuous win, this time on a on a Lok Janshakti Party ticket, from Matia Mahal.

From the BJP, its four time winners are: Delhi unit president Harshvardhan from Krishna Nagar, opposition leader in Delhi assembly Jagdish Mukhi from Janakpuri and sitting legislators Jai Bhagwan Aggarwal from Rohini, Harcharan Singh Balli from Hari Nagar and O.P. Babbar from Tilak Nagar.

Lawmaker Ram Singh Netaji, who won the earlier three elections on Congress ticket from Badarpur, won on the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) seat this time. He defected to the BSP after the Congress denied him a ticket.
