An evening of peace in Jamia Nagar for Mumbai victims

National, Sat, 06 Dec 2008 IANS

New Delhi, Dec 6 (IANS) To share the pain of the Mumbai carnage victims, residents of Jamia Nagar in south Delhi Saturday ogranised an evening of 'peace', in defence of 'non-violence and love' and to abhor 'hate and violence'.

The event of music and poetry was held in association with Jamia Millia Islamia university and the Awam theatre group.

'We stand to share the pain of those killed in terror attacks. We are opposed to killings of innocents whether by terrorists or by the state,' said Mohammed Ayub, 31, a businessman in Jamia Nagar and one of the organisers of the event.

Jamia Nagar, a predominantly Muslim locality, was in the news Sep 19 when Delhi Police gunned down two suspected terrorists of the Indian Mujahideen in the area. The shootout took place a week after the national capital was rocked by a series of deadly bomb blasts that killed 26 people.

About Saturday's event, Manisha Sethi, a member of Jamia Teachers Solidarity Group said: 'Its our attempt to create awareness against every kind of terror whether terror in the name of religion or the state (sponsored) terror.'

'We organised this event in defence of peace, non-violence, secularism and democracy and against hate, violence and fascism,' Sethi told IANS.

David Barsamian, prominent anti war activist and founder of alternative Radio in the US also spoke at the programme.

'Terrorism or killings of innocents can not be justified, but roots of terror lie in injustice and inequality in society. If we want to fight terrorism, we will have to do away with injustice and inequality,' Barsamian said.

Some banners of the Jamia Teachers Solidaity Group reiterated the demand of holding an independent judicial inquiry into the Sep 19 shoutout in which a police officer also lost his life.
